TV Nation

Last night for Mother's Day dinner we went to one of our favorite restaurants, Mi Jalapeno in Springfield, Ohio. The first time we went to this restaurant, the service was fantastic, the food was great and quite reasonably priced. We've been back many times since then and the service has been great and the food very enjoyable. Sometimes the waite-staff doesn't speak English well and we have to work a little harder to communicate, but it is a Mexican restaurant so I consider that to be mark of authenticity and not an inconvenience at all.

But Last Night! We sit down and there are giant televisions all over the restaurant. Not just in the bar, but in the main dining room. Several are showing a Spanish-language version of ESPN and several are showing something like VH1. The VH1 screens were broadcasting moderately softly over the restaurant sound system. The music videos are unbelievable. In one video they had women pole dancing. I can't decide if I was fortunate my 10 and 12 year old daughters didn't ask me about the pole dancing. I figure in a couple more years they'll start broadcasting Ow My Balls.

I've noticed that most people in the restaurant don't seem to notice the televisions. The sit, talk, eat and laugh without a glance. For myself and my family it is terribly distracting and disruptive. So who are these televisions for? The people completely desensitized to televisions don't actually watch them.

Now I have a sense of loss because we'll never return to this restaurant. This is not the first restaurant we like that has decided to provide eye-smack for their customers. It pisses me off.
